Performance and durability of concrete with carbonated recycled concrete fines

This data set provides experimental data to a journal publication. It contains data of/for:

  • wet carbonation of fines based on hardened cement paste,
  • concrete mix-designs,
  • concrete tests.

Notice: Data format is .csv. When opening the .csv files in Excel, use “.” as decimal separator. Otherwise, numbers might be displayed incorrectly (e.g. as date).

Wet carbonation process: Folder 1

For the wet carbonation process the temperature and pH of the suspension during the treatment are given.

Concrete mix designs: Folder 2

The concrete mix designs comprise three different concretes in combination with four different cements; in total 12 concrete compositions.

  • Concrete 1 with w/c ratio 0.50
  • Concrete 2 with w/c ratio 0.45 for frost resistance test (CIF)
  • Concrete 3 with w/c ratio 0.50 and air-entrainment for salt frost scaling resistance test (CDF)

Concrete tests: Folder 3

The concrete tests comprise:

3.1 Fresh concrete properties: Air content of fresh concrete in accordance with DIN EN 12350-7. Workability (spread diameter) in accordance with DIN EN 12350-5.

3.2 Compressive strength in accordance with DIN EN 12390-3. For Concrete 1 results are given for a testing age of 2, 7 and 28 days. Concrete 2 and Concrete 3 were tested only at an age of 28 days. The results are given as fc,cube.

3.3 Frost resistance using the CIF/CF method in accordance with DIN TR 15177 and DIN CEN/TS 12390-9. Data for Internal damage is provided as Relative Dynamic Modulus of elasticity (RDME). Furthermore, data for scaling damage and liquid uptake is provided.

3.4 Salt-frost resistance using the CDF method in accordance with DIN EN/TS 12390-9. Data for scaling damage and liquid uptake is provided.

3.5 Carbonation resistance following DIN EN 12390-12 in 1 vol.% CO2 and following DIN EN 12390-10 in standard climate with atmospheric CO2-concentration.

3.6 Shrinkage, measured as autogenous shrinkage (no evaporation) until the age of 7 days and as total shrinkage (autogenous + drying shrinkage) until the age of 90 days. Data on the length change and weight change of the specimens is provided.

A more detailed description of experimental procedures can be found in the corresponding journal article (not yet published).
