BirdNET-Based Bird Species Detections and Environmental Data from 20 Temperate Forest Sites in Jena, Thuringia (2024)

This dataset contains bird detections from 20 forest sites around Jena, Thuringia, Germany, collected via passive acoustic monitoring across the four seasons of 2024, along with additional environmental variables describing the sites. These sites form part of the “WZE@Jena” monitoring project (Waldzustandserhebung Jena), which is a long-term survey of forest conditions. This is a joint project between Friedrich Schiller University Jena and Stadtforst Jena. The sites were randomly selected and comprise 20 sites of six different forest types. The bird data was gathered using AudioMoth recorders, and species were identified using BirdNET. The “bird_detections.csv” file contains the complete list of detections (after various preprocessing/filtering steps and validation; see the README). The “env_variables.csv” contains additional environmental variables per site, including structural site characteristics, vegetation data, and microclimatic data (temperature, relative humidity, light).
